SILVER COINS

  • Halves 1965-1969 are called clad and are 40% silver

  • 95% of all silver coins only have a silver value. Only 5% of all silver coins have a premium value outside of it's silver value, called numismatic value.

GOLD COINS

  • American gold coins

  • Similar to silver, most gold coins are worth their gold weight, although there is a slightly larger percentage of gold coins that have numismatic value. This is due to the initial rarity of gold coins, as well as the good condition they are commonly in from far less circulation.

  • The different patterns can be common to different coin face values. They are St. Gaudens, The Liberty, and Indian head.

  • There are a few other patterns for US bullion gold coins, but these do not carry a face value.

  • Many coins will be marked 1oz gold, but weigh more than one ounce. This is most often due to 90% gold purity, commonly performed for improved durability. The slight overweight of the coin ensures that there is 1oz of .999 fine gold within the coin.

  • Never spend a gold coin for it’s face value. Most should already know this.

Foreign gold coins

  • Many foreign gold coins can share the same name but have a different minting country. Francs, and ducats are good examples. Different countries use different patterns, but the coin value is the same.

  • As with US gold coins and mentioned above, some can be 90% purity and weigh more than the marked weight.

  • Similar to US coins, there are both bullion that do not have a face value and currency coins that do have a face value.

  • Do not spend your foreign gold coins for their face value.

AUTHENTICATION:

Verification of numismatic assets.

  • When it comes to coins with numismatic value, some are worth having graded. Others are not

  • There are two primary coin grading companies that are well trusted. PCGS, and NGC.

  • Grading often costs $200+, so consider grading for coins whose numismatic value will be high enough for the grading cost to be worthwhile.

  • Learn about the different coin grades and the grading scale. This can affect the price of a numismatic coin dramatically.
